Topsoil, 2026Video, Stereo Sound, 3’12”


A dead stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) lies suspended within a stroboscopic field. Not buried, not preserved, but held in suspension.Around it, hands enter and withdraw. Their fingernails are extended with pinecone petals, forming surfaces that are both ornamental and invasive. They touch soil, reposition organic and digital matter. Each gesture is precise, contained, and inconclusive. Nothing resolves. The action circles without arriving.The beetle does not settle into meaning, nor fully into the image as a body. It resists becoming specimen or symbol, remaining instead a point of friction, something approached, adjusted, but not absorbed.
Movement fractures under a pulsing rhythm. Continuity collapses into intervals; time stalls, thickens, disperses. The viewer is held inside a sequence of imminent actions that never complete. Within this field, the gesture of looking oscillates between care and control, delicacy and intrusion. The beetle’s armoured, antlered form, coded as force, display, and dominance, is met by movements that are meticulous, adorned, and unstable TOPSOIL remains at the threshold where touch precedes consequence, and where the surface of the earth is not an end, but an active, shifting boundary.

Die Werkserie Botenstoffe 1 – 5 nutzt das Prinzip der Lithophanie. Ein Verfahren, bei dem Reliefbilder erst durch rückseitiges Licht sichtbar werden. In feinen Schattierungen modelliert, entfalten sich die Motive nur im Durchlicht: Sichtbarkeit entsteht hier durch Transparenz und Tiefe, nicht durch klare Kontur. Die Kästen werden mit zufälligen Zeitschaltuhren ein- und ausgeschaltet, zeigen so das Material auch ohne Hinterleuchtung, wobei andere Details und Artefakte vom Druckprozess sichtbar werden. 

Formal orientieren sich die Arbeiten an&#38;nbsp; klassischem Briefpapier – jenen zart verzierten Untergründen für Botschaften, auf denen Sprache üblicherweise ihren Ausdruck findet.&#38;nbsp;
Doch die vertrauten Ornamente wie Ranken, Rosen oder Schnörkel sind verschwunden. An ihre Stelle treten Symbole heutiger Kommunikation und Kontrolle: Über- wachungskameras, Screens, Pass- bildraster, Schmetterlinge auf Augenlidern. Was einst dekorativer Rahmen war, wird nun zur Projektionsfläche für gegenwärtige Inhalte.


In dieser Verschiebung verlagert sich das Gesagte vom Text zur Oberfläche, vom Wort zum Symbol. Was passiert, wenn Sprache ihren Platz räumt und Bildlichkeit Bedeutung übernimmt? Wenn das Ornament nicht mehr schmückt, sondern spricht? Botenstoffe erkundet diesen Moment des Transfers – zwischen Sichtbarkeit und Schweigen, zwischen der Ästhetik des Privaten und den Mechanismen des Öffentlichen.

	This visual research project presents an artistic research project based on visual materials originating from corporate publications of the 1980s. The images—many of which derive from period clip art—have been recontextualized, juxtaposed, and partially altered through collage and recombination.

Through their displacement and proximity to one another, the images are used to construct alternative readings&#38;nbsp;that diverge from their original illustrative or persuasive intent. Meaning arises from the relationships created between images, rather than from any individual image in isolation.

All visual material is presented within a transformative artistic and analytical context. The use of these images is limited, non-commercial, and subordinate to the project’s critical and interpretive purpose. Copyright in the original materials remains with the respective rights holders.
